Industrial Machinery Universal Joints

Industrial Machinery Universal Joints(High torque capacity to extend operating life)
Timothy Holding Co., Ltd. specialize in producing universal joints and complete drive shaft assemblies designed for the industrial machine industry, specifically coil processing applications for the metals industry. Timothy Holding Co.,Ltd. is able to increase the torque capacity of the universal joint by making modifications to the profile and upgrading materials. While the basic function of the universal joint remains the same, the enhanced mechanical properties extend the operating life. Assemblies can be manufactured with lubricant retaining boots if required. The Leveler universal joint drive shaft assembly easily handles the tough operating conditions of industrial machinery.
The single leveler style universal joint design can be modified into complete drive shaft assemblies with a telescoping feature and spring load for easy on/ off installation. End hubs can be bored for any inside diameter and depth, inthrough bore or blind bore configurations for added strength.

Universal joints

universal jointuniversal couplingU-jointCardan jointHardy-Spicer joint, or Hooke's joint is a joint or coupling in a rigid rod that allows the rod to 'bend' in any direction, and is commonly used in shafts that transmit rotary motion. It consists of a pair of hinges located close together, oriented at 90° to each other, connected by a cross shaft.

Drive shaft for rolling mills

Drive shaft/cardan shaft/propeller shaft
drive shaftdriveshaftdriving shaftpropeller shaft (prop shaft), or Cardan shaft is a mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation, usually used to connect other components of a drive train that cannot be connected directly because of distance or the need to allow for relative movement between them.
Drive shafts are carriers of torque: they are subject to torsion and shear stress, equivalent to the difference between the input torque and the load. They must therefore be strong enough to bear the stress, whilst avoiding too much additional weight as that would in turn increase their inertia.
To allow for variations in the alignment and distance between the driving and driven components, drive shafts frequently incorporate one or moreuniversal jointsjaw couplings, or rag joints, and sometimes a splined joint or prismatic joint.

Mechanical engineering cardan shaft

Mechanical engineering cardan shaft

A shaft with a universal joint at its end to accommodate a varying shaft angle.
Inmotor vehicles, a Cardan shaft is used to connect the motor and transmission(at an angle of up to 5°), the transmission and transfer case (at an angle ofup to 5°), and the transmission or transfer case and the rear-axle drive (at anangle of up to 15°), as well as in steering gear or winch drive.
ACardan shaft consists of a propeller shaft with two (less frequently one)Cardans. If the propeller shaft is connecting mechanisms between which theangle and distance vary (for example, the transmission and rear-axle drive of amotor vehicle), overhang balance is provided in the form of a slip splinedjoint, which makes possible a change in the length of the shaft within setlimits. Depending on the angle between the propeller shafts in a Cardan shaft, rigid or flexible semi-Cardan joints, full Cardans of unequal angular velocity,or Cardans of equal angular velocity may be used. Full Cardans, which have twojaws, needle bearings, a spider, mounts for the spider journals, and atightening mechanism, are the most commonly used type. The efficiency of asingle Cardan is 0.985–0.99.

Drive shaft coupling / cardan shaft coupling

coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power. Couplings do not normally allow disconnection of shafts during operation, however there are torque limiting couplings which can slip or disconnect when some torque limit is exceeded.
The primary purpose of couplings is to join two pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of misalignment or end movement or both. By careful selection, installation and maintenance of couplings, substantial savings can be made in reduced maintenance costs and downtime.

Universal Coupling Maintenance

Coupling Maintenance
_fairoot_ABUIABACGAAg6feilAUokNyQ3gQwwgM4qQI
Coupling maintenance is generally a simple matter, requiring a regularly scheduled inspection of each coupling. It consists of:
  • Performing visual inspections, checking for signs of wear or fatigue, and cleaning couplings regularly.
  • Checking and changing lubricant regularly if the coupling is lubricated. This maintenance is required annually for most couplings and more frequently for couplings in adverse environments or in demanding operating conditions.
  • Documenting the maintenance performed on each coupling, along with the date.
Even with proper maintenance, however, couplings can fail. Underlying reasons for failure, other than maintenance, include:
  • Improper installation
  • Poor coupling selection
  • Operation beyond design capabilities.
The only way to improve coupling life is to understand what caused the failure and to correct it prior to installing a new coupling. Some external signs that indicate potential coupling failure include:
  • Abnormal noise, such as screeching, squealing or chattering
  • Excessive vibration or wobble
  • Failed seals indicated by lubricant leakage or contamination.

Double Cardan Shaft

Double Cardan Shaft

A configuration known as a double Cardan joint drive shaft partially overcomes the problem of jerky rotation. This configuration uses two U-joints joined by an intermediate shaft, with the second U-joint phased in relation to the first U-joint to cancel the changing angular velocity. In this configuration, the angular velocity of the driven shaft will match that of the driving shaft, provided that both the driving shaft and the driven shaft are at equal angles with respect to the intermediate shaft (but not necessarily in the same plane) and that the two universal joints are 90 degrees out of phase. This assembly is commonly employed in rear wheel drive vehicles, where it is known as a drive shaft or propeller (prop) shaft.
Even when the driving and driven shafts are at equal angles with respect to the intermediate shaft, if these angles are greater than zero, oscillating moments are applied to the three shafts as they rotate. These tend to bend them in a direction perpendicular to the common plane of the shafts. This applies forces to the support bearings and can cause "launch shudder" in rear wheel drive vehicles.[13] The intermediate shaft will also have a sinusoidal component to its angular velocity, which contributes to vibration and stresses.
Mathematically, this can be shown as follows: If \gamma_1\, and \gamma_2\, are the angles for the input and output of the universal joint connecting the drive and the intermediate shafts respectively, and \gamma_3\, and \gamma_4\, are the angles for the input and output of the universal joint connecting the intermediate and the output shafts respectively, and each pair are at angle \beta\, with respect to each other, then:
\tan\gamma_2=\cos\beta\,\tan\gamma_1\qquad\tan\gamma_4=\cos\beta\,\tan\gamma_3
If the second universal joint is rotated 90 degrees with respect to the first, then \gamma_3=\gamma_2+\pi/2. Using the fact that \tan(\gamma+\pi/2)=1/\tan\gamma yields:
\tan\gamma_4=\cos\beta/\tan\gamma_2=1/\tan\gamma_1=\tan(\gamma_1+\pi/2)\,
and it is seen that the output drive is just 90 degrees out of phase with the input shaft, yielding a constant-velocity drive.
